Childbirth Classes

To meet the needs of new and experienced parents, Carilion offers a variety of obstetrical and parenting classes. The following information describes the classes available. Pre-registration is required for most classes. Classes fill quickly, so call early in your pregnancy to register.


Baby Care Basics

Program Information
Learn the basics of caring for a newborn by addressing such topics as bathing, getting the baby to sleep, understanding baby's cry, diapering, dressing, temperature taking, feeding a newborn, home and car safety, and more. This class offers expectant parents the opportunity to practice taking care of baby's basic needs. Fee.

Breastfeeding Class

Program Information
During this class, a Certified Lactation Consultant provides the information you need to decide if breastfeeding is the right choice for you and your new baby and provide basic instruction on breastfeeding techniques and benefits. Fee.

Car Seat Safety

Program Information
This two-hour class will educate you on how to properly fit your child in a child safety seat and how to properly install a child safety seat into your vehicle. No charge.

Infant CPR

Program Information
Using infant CPR manikins, you gain experience and hands-on training in infant CPR. This class is offered several times a month and is taught by a certified instructor. Fee.

Hospital Tours

Program Information
Become acquainted with the hospital and admission procedure prior to delivery by joining us in a hospital tour. Tours are conducted throughout the month. Plan to attend approximately six weeks prior to delivery. No charge.

Prepared Childbirth Education

Program Information
This six-week series helps you and your support partner learn the skills needed to approach labor and birth prepared. Topics include breathing and relaxation techniques, the labor partner's role, variations of labor, the labor and birth process, adjustment to parenthood and many other details of labor and birth. Plan to attend this class in the beginning of your third trimester. Fee.

Pharmacy Services
Carilion-owned Pharmacies

Program Information
In addition to convenience, Medical Center Pharmacy (MCP) in Roanoke and Community Pharmacy at CNRV offer employees 10 percent off over-the-counter drugs, a frequent purchaser card and a wide array of prescription products that may not be carried by other retail pharmacies. MCP also offers delivery to specified Roanoke locations.

Smoking Cessation

Free & Clear

Program Information
Free and Clear offers one of the most successful tobacco treatment programs available today, because they help you quit your way by finding out what has worked for you in the past and what hasn't.

Carilion provides Free and Clear at no cost to you.

As an added benefit, your spouse and adult dependent children also are eligible to participate in this program.

Weight Loss

Weight Loss Solutions

Program Information
This 12-week program addresses the participants' physical, dietary and psychological issues involved in implementing an effective and safe weight loss program.

Participants must be referred to the Weight Management Program by a physician and must have a BMI >30 or >28 with other comorbidities. Other requirements must be meet. Employees who complete the program may be eligible for reimbursement of the programs fee.

Women's Health
Girl Talk

Program Information
This class is designed for mothers and their nine- to 12-year-old daughters and helps strengthen communication concerning adolescence and puberty. The workshop covers a wide range of topics to help girls make informed, responsible decisions concerning their bodies. Offered quarterly.

Program Information
Offered quarterly, WHU programs feature nationally known speakers, who share their expertise on a women's health and wellness topic over a light lunch. Past topics have focused on the heart, skin, hormones, breast, sleep, bones, urogynecology and nutrition.

Employees may receive a discount on some offerings.
