Every day across our region,
thousands of you dedicate yourselves to helping
those in need. You show time and time again how
committed you are to ensuring that our families,
friends and neighbors receive the comprehensive
care that can help them maintain and improve their
health.
But, our commitment to ensuring good health isn’t
limited to our patients—we also want you
to be as healthy as possible. When you're feeling
well, you can enjoy a better quality of life and
that helps you perform better at work.
| What Has Happened with this Initiative So Far? |
- In November 2005, we announced
a partnership with Anthem and Lewis Gale Medical
Center to become tobacco-free for our employees. Anthem made their Roanoke-based facilities
tobacco-free in November 2005, and Carilion and
Lewis-Gale did the same in June 2006.
- In November 2006, we again partnered with Lewis Gale Medical Center to announce that both organizations' Roanoke facilities would become tobacco free for everyone - including patients and visitors - as the next step in this initiative. The transition to completely tobacco-free environments in our Roanoke facilities took place on July 4, 2007. For more information, click here.

| Surgeon
General's Report on the Dangers of Secondhand Smoke
On June 27, 2006 the U.S. Surgeon
General released a report on the effects of secondhand
smoke.
According to Health and Human Services Secretary Michael
Leavitt, "The report is a crucial warning sign
to nonsmokers and smokers alike. Smoking can sicken
and kill, and even people who do not smoke can be harmed
by smoke from those who do."
