Each year we recognize employees who have reached significant anniversary dates of employment. Employees first receive this recognition after five continuous years of employment and every five years thereafter.
Employees receive service awards at their homes during their anniversary month as a way of individually honoring their contributions. Employees who are celebrating a ten-year anniversary or higher are eligible to choose their award from a varied selection. Five-year award recipients receive the Carilion Service Award Pin.
The service award process works like this:
- Employees with anniversaries ten years or higher are sent packets to their homes on a quarterly basis. The packets are sent during the quarter that the employee's anniversary month occurs. (Note: the packets are mailed the month before each quarter begins.)
- Employees can order by mail, phone or on the Internet.
- Their gift is shipped to their homes during their anniversary month.
- Employees who do not place an order for a gift or service pin are automatically sent either a pin or watch appropriate for their years of service. (All levels are given service pins except 25-year level recipients who receive watches.) Those not placing an order are shipped their pin or gift at the end of the quarter, not during their anniversary month.
Back to top Each spring we publicly recognize our service award recipients during system-wide activities. These events usually include a cookout celebration for all Roanoke-based facilities and individual cookouts at each of the community facilities.

The retirement recognition process is designed to show our appreciation to employees who are pursuing retirement after dedicating years of service to our organization. Employees retiring after five continuous years of full- or part-time employment receive a retirement gift brochure from which they may choose a gift. Selection varies according to years of service. In addition, Carilion provides $20 per year of credited service, up to $500, for retirement recognition. Our retirement recognition program gives retiring employees the following two options for how these funds may be used:
A Celebration
A Donation to the United Way
-
Carilion will make a donation on behalf of the retiring employee to the United Way to be used in supporting partner agencies throughout the region. ( Click here to see a list of partner agencies.) Since the donation is being made by Carilion, it is not tax-deductible to the employee.

Employees who achieve 25 years or more of continuous service with Carilion join Carilion's Quarter Century Society. Formed in 1999, the Quarter Century Society is made up of approximately 500 employees throughout the System. Members receive special recognition when they first join the Society and on other occasions throughout the year.
The Induction Process
When members become eligible to join the Society, a congratulatory letter is sent to their home. E-mails announcing their induction are also sent to all levels of their managers. A framed certificate is sent to their VP for presentation to the member.
For more information about the Quarter Century Society and QCS events, visit QCS Corner on the Intranet by choosing Recognition Central from the Recognition Dates box on the right-hand side of the Intranet homepage. Then, choose QCS Corner from the box on the right side of the screen.
