Signed into law in 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) establishes national standards to protect patients' personal and medical records. The requirements reach to the heart of healthcare organizations, sometimes changing organizational structures and processes. The key is finding a balance between the need for timely retrieval of health information while maintaining the confidentiality and sensitivity of that information.
