Benefits

Medkey may be helpful if:

You’re caring for elderly parents and you want to help them pay their Medicare copays.

Your ex-spouse carries your children on his medical insurance, and you need to take your child to the Emergency Department.

Your adult child doesn’t have medical insurance through his work, and you want to help him pay for physical therapy for a basketball injury.

Medkey: Affordable Access to Medical Credit

As a Carilion employee, you have easy access to MedKey, a benefit to help you budget your medical expenses. MedKey is a revolving line of credit that allows patients to consolidate their medical bills into one account.

MedKey is like a credit card. Participants are issued a card to present at the time of service; charges at participating providers are added to their MedKey account. Charges don’t have to be for the account holder. You can use MedKey for your own medical expenses, or your spouse’s, children’s or parent’s medical expenses; however, as the account holder, you will be responsible for paying the account. And, you don’t have to have Carilion’s medical plan to participate.

Many local medical providers, including the Emergency Departments at Carilion facilities, participate in MedKey. Click here for a list of participating providers. Carilion Medical Group practices, physical therapy and infertility treatment providers participate on a case-by-case basis. Check with your healthcare providers to see if they accept MedKey.

MedKey is easy to apply for; there’s no credit check. Click here to apply online. In addition, as a participant, you’ll have low monthly payments, and the first 90 days of each new charge is interest free. Carilion employees also are offered:

  • No annual fee ($20 per year for non-employees).
  • 5.99 percent interest rate.
  • Guaranteed approval.
  • Ability to use payroll deduction to make payments.
